At Corning Union High School we take a lot of pride in our athletic programs. We have always held our athletes to a higher standard and have very high expectations for them. Our coaches are demanding and never wavier when it comes to teaching life skills that are necessary in helping our athletes to become successful young adults. We insist on good sportsmanship and a good attitude at all times. Every day we work on principles that will help these young athletes become better people and productive citizens. We practice honesty, integrity, discipline, respect, accountability, and positive attitude every day in our practices and games.
Every year a large percentage of our student body participates in athletics at Corning High School. We are proud of all of them and really appreciate what they add to the culture of our school and the way they represent us at all times.We thank them for their efforts and achievements.
Athletics Code of Behavior
Corning High School currently has a Code of Behavior, which is clearly defined in the student handbook. This policy pertains to all students while under the supervision of Corning Union High School, and all students while currently engaged in either the extracurricular programs must read the Code of Behavior and understand that these policies pertain to them.
Any athlete, who is suspended from school will miss any contest during that suspension plus the following contest.
All athletes must attend school the full day of all athletic contests or may not participate in any contest that day. Any student late to school on the day of a contest must be cleared through the Athletic Director. Any absence on such day must be cleared in advance by the Athletic Director.
All athletes must attend at least two periods or more in order to participate in practice on that day.
Athletics
- Corning Union High School is a member of the Northern Athletic League composed of Anderson, West Valley, Central Valley, and Yreka.
- Physical examinations and insurance are required for everyone trying out for any sport. An examination is made available to all athletes at no charge in obtained on “Athlete Physical Day” during the summer. Otherwise, physical must be provided by the student
- Athletic areas, fields, and gymnasium make interscholastic sports possible. We must work together to maintain these areas.
- Any student participating in co-curricular activities including athletics must maintain a 2.0 grade point average to be eligible for participation. A student with more than three F’s is ineligible for participation until the succeeding grade period. A student may become eligible at the end of the progress report grading period with a grade point average of 2.0 or better.
- Athletes must provide their own towels while engaging in a sport. This does not apply to P.E.
- Athletes must provide their own insurance coverage. NO STUDENT CAN PARTICIPATE WITHOUT INSURANCE COVERAGE.
- Dress code applies at ALL school functions, including away games.
- Admission prices for athletic contests:
Football- Adults and Students without ASB card $5
Students with ASB card $2
Basketball: Adults and Students without ASB card $4
Wrestling- Students with ASB card $1
Volleyball- Adults and Students without ASB card $3
Students with ASB card $1
Due Process in Extracurricular Activities
Participation in extracurricular activities, which includes athletics, is a privilege which must be earned by the student. The student forfeits the right when he/she breaks the rules that are developed to govern participation in that particular activity.
However, to insure the equitable treatment of all students at Corning High School, the following procedures are provided whenever a student’s eligibility to participate in an activity is suspended.
- All students and parents are provided the opportunity to know the rules and regulations that govern a particular activity and the consequences of breaking these rules.
- Any student found to be in violation of the rules will be informed of the charges brought against him/her.
- The student if provided with the opportunity to tell his/her version of what occurred.
- The student is informed of the next steps that will occur in the discipline procedure and the consequences for further violations.
- The parents/guardians are notified each time that a suspension from activities occurs.

A method of appealing any decision is provided by the school.

For Athletes
- A student and/or parent should prepare a written appeal statement addressed to the Athletic Director.
- The Athletic Director will make a decision based on evidence presented by the student and the coach or other supervisor.
- A further appeal would be available to the student by preparing a written appeal statement to the high school administration.

For any other activity
- A student and/or parent should prepare a written appeal statement addressed to the Director of Activities and the school administration.
- A decision will be reached by the appropriate supervisor and/or administrators based on the evidence presented by the student and the activity supervisor or others involved in the activity.
- A further appeal would be available to the student by preparing a written appeal statement to the next level of administration.
