Course Descriptions
Geography
This is the first of four Social Science classes students will take at Corning Union High School. The purpose of this course is to prepare students to be successful in their classes, Social Science and otherwise, at CUHS over the next four years. Much of this course will deal with World Geography, the study of people and places throughout the world. A strong understanding of this subject will give students a foundation for other social science classes. While Geography will be the main topic, there will be other topics discussed as well, such as study skills and character development in an effort to assure students are well rounded citizens.
World History
This course will explore ideas and concepts dealing with the history of the world. In this course students will learn about the people, places and events that have shaped the world from the 18th Century until present day and how those subjects affect them on an everyday basis. This course will specifically focus on the rise of democratic ideas and the historical roots of current world issues. If a student understands the world around him/her, it allows him/her to take a proactive role in improving his/her life. Citizens who lack knowledge of their world can be easily manipulated by those in power; therefore the knowledge of one's past is vital to a fulfilling and rewarding life.
"All great things are simple, and many can be expressed in a single word: freedom, justice, honor, duty, mercy, hope." -Winston Chruchill
