Ms. Atkinson's Homepage

Ms. AtkinsonI'm Ms. Karen Atkinson and I teach both History of Ceramics and Art 1 drawing at Corning High. I've been here for 8 years and have very much enjoyed being part of this exceptional Fine Arts Department. We've worked hard to create and maintain classes where students learn the fundamentals of design and craft. These skills give them grounding to express their own creative interests. I continue to be impressed with the outstanding work that our students produce. They are much appreciated by the larger community also given the many awards and honors they receive.

My own art making practice includes the crafts of drawing, painting and ceramics. Traveling has broadened my appreciation for our worlds' variety of artistic expression. I fell in love with the Italian Majolica tradition of ceramic decoration. This tradition has circled the globe and teaches us how closely cultures are linked through craft. Closer to home, I have studied and practiced the reduction fire processes of Pueblo Style pottery of the Southwest. The ceramic classes have created exemplary work in both of these traditions. It is such a pleasure coming to work everyday to see students fast at work on their creations!
