Classroom Rules
English I & II
Classroom Rules, Policies, and Expectations
Absences:
- If you are absent the day an assignment is due, you must turn it in at the beginning of the next class meeting.
- If you are absent the day the assignment is given, you must get the missed assignment the first day you return and then turn it in the following class meeting.
- If you will miss school due to a school related activity, such as sports or field trips, you must get all the work that will be assigned while you are gone and still turn it in on time. You must also turn in, on time, any work that is due the class period you will be gone.
Grading:
Every assignment you do in this class will fit into one of four categories. The assignment will be worth 1 point, 4 points, 8 points, or 16 points, depending on the weight of the assignment. For instance, a major essay would most likely be worth 16 points, whereas a homework assignment would more likely be worth 1 - 4 points. Your grade is then calculated (by obtaining an average) using a 4-point scale, 4 being the highest, 1 being the lowest.
For those of you who are most comfortable with letter grades, I’ve included some information that might be helpful to you below:
16-Point Assignments 8-Point Assignments 4-Point Assignments 1-Point Assignments
14-16 A 7-8 A 4 A 1 A
10-13 B 5-6 B 3 B .75 B
6-9 C 3-4 C 2 C .5 C
4-5 D 1-2 D 1 D .25 D
1-3 F
Classroom Participation: All students are expected to cooperate and actively participate in all classroom activities and discussions.
Homework: All work must be turned in on time. Late work will not be accepted for points. I will, however, mark a late assignment completed. A small assignment marked complete may bump a borderline grade up to the next grade. A large scale assignment, late but complete, may prevent a student from failing the class. Homework is due at the beginning of class. If a student does not turn in homework, he/she may be required to serve ISP in order to complete any missing assignments or current homework.
Tardies:
- The first three tardies are without penalty and may be made up by serving ISP the day a tardy is received.
- If a student receives a fourth tardy, I will notify his/her parents and require him/her to serve an ISP.
- If a student is tardy a fifth time he/she will be referred to the vice principal.
- Tardies are earned for being late – not seated in your desk when the bell rings. Using the restroom during class time or leaving class for any other personal reasons costs 10 minutes after school, or students may take a tardy.
Classroom Materials: Students are expected to bring the following materials to class everyday: personal reading material, notebook, paper, pen/pencil, and class assigned literature.
Student Behavior:Students are expected to be courteous, respectful, encouraging, and supportive to everyone.
- Consequences for inappropriate behavior:
- First offense: warning
- Second offense: ISP
- Third offense: parent/guardian contact
- Fourth offense: referral to vice principal
- Depending on the severity of one’s actions, inappropriate behavior may result in any of the above consequences.
- There are also positive consequences for good behavior and academic performance.
It is truly an honor to work with your child. Please contact me to check his or her progress or to see what we are doing in class. Working together, we can help your student advance his or her skills and achieve academic success.
