Grading Policy

Your grade in this class is based primarily upon these components:essays, homework, quizzes/tests, miscellaneous assignments and projects, reading responses, oral assignments, and class participation.

Every assignment you do in this class will fit into one of four categories.  The assignment will either be worth 1 point, 4 points, 8 points, or 12 points, depending on the weight of the assignment.  For instance, a major essay would most likely be worth 12 points, whereas a homework assignment would more likely be worth 1 point.  Your scores are then converted to a grade point average (your total divided by the number possible x 4), and the following breakdown is used to determine your grade:

3.6-4.0   A

2.6-3.5   B

1.6-2.5   C

1.0-1.5   D

0-.9        F

For those of you who are more comfortable receiving letter grades on your assignments, I’ve included some information that might be helpful to you below:

Late Work:

I will accept some assignments late, but these assignments will drop 1 point if turned in at the end of the period or the end of the day (and remember, a point is a significant amount on this grading scale), and 2 points for each day after that. Some assignments I will not accept late.  I will notify you in advance if this is the case.

Make-Up Work:

If you are absent, it is your responsibility to find out what you missed and make up the work in a reasonable amount of time, no exceptions. The number of make-up days you have equals the number of days you were absent, unless you have special arrangements with me. I realize that sometimes you may get bogged down with make-up work from all of your classes and may need an extension. You must arrange this with me before the due date, however, or I will not honor your request, and you should have a valid reason for requesting an extension.

School Activities/Athletic Events:

It is your responsibility to notify me in advance if you will be gone for a school related event so that I can give you the work that you’ll miss. You will be expected to complete the work, on schedule, with the rest of the students in the class. If you come back from being gone and have not completed the missed work, it will be counted late.
