Gary Burton

Today we honor the legacy of Gary Burton, a coach whose impact on track and field shaped generations of athletes at Corning High School and Northern California.
Gary passed away in February at the age of 88.
Over a remarkable 30-year career, Coach Burton built one of the most dominant track and field programs in the region. His teams won 16 league championships in 25 years and captured multiple section titles, setting a standard of excellence that few programs have matched.
But his success was never just about winning.
Coach Burton believed in discipline, honesty, and effort. He built his program on the idea that every athlete mattered, that improvement came through hard work, and that competing was about representing something bigger than yourself - your team, your school, and your community.
He was known as a master teacher of technique, a demanding but fair coach, and someone who consistently brought out the best in his athletes - whether they went on to compete in college, coach themselves, or simply carry his lessons into life.
Gary Burton started the Corning Invitational in the early 60s when there were very few invitationals in the area. The meet was named after him in 1994 in honor of his retirement and all he had done for the Corning Track and Field program.
His influence is still felt today in the pride, work ethic, and tradition of this meet.
As we compete in the Gary Burton Invitational, we don't just honor a great coach - we carry forward the standard he set.
